CINEMATOGRAPHY PROCESS

Cinematography is more than just capturing images; it is about translating a narrative into a distinct visual language. By exploring the balance between traditional film craft and modern innovation, I ensure that every frame serves the emotional core of the story.

1: Narrative Drama – The Visual Subtext

In narrative fiction, my approach is always script-first. With over 20 years behind the lens, I’ve learned that cinematic language is most powerful when it serves the emotional arc of the character. I don’t just light a scene; I light the subtext.

In my drama work, I often employ narrative lighting to create a sense of psychological depth. Whether it’s a minimalist festival film or a large-scale international production, the goal is to find a naturalistic balance that feels authentic to the world of the story. By carefully selecting lenses and managing texture, I ensure that every frame resonates with the director's vision, providing a visual anchor for the performance.

2: Commercial & Branding – Aesthetic Precision

Commercial cinematography is the art of translating brand values into moving images. My work in this sector focuses on brand aesthetics - creating a premium visual identity that speaks to the target audience without words.

I treat every commercial project as a high-end visual narrative. By combining technical precision with a keen eye for composition, I elevate the product or service into a cinematic experience. Consistency is key here; I work closely with creative directors to ensure that the lighting, colour palette, and movement align perfectly with the brand's established DNA, delivering a polished, international standard.

3: Documentary – The Art of Observation

Documentary filmmaking requires a unique blend of intuition and technical adaptability. My experience in complex and international environments has taught me to find beauty in the unplanned.

My visual choices in documentaries are guided by naturalistic lighting and a both observational and intimate camera style. It’s about being present without being intrusive. I strive to capture 'the visual heart' of the moment, ensuring that the setting and context feel as alive as the subjects themselves. This 'reassurance' in the field allows the story to unfold naturally, backed by two decades of professional craft.

4: The Machine: AI-Driven Previsualisation (A Modern Edge)

To bridge the gap between imagination and execution, I integrate AI-driven previsualisation into my workflow. Using tools like Nano Banana, Veo 3.1, Seedance and advanced LLMs, I can sketch out complex sequences long before we arrive on set. This modern approach to pre-production provides directors and clients with total visual clarity, allowing us to experiment with lighting and composition in a digital environment. It’s about removing technical friction to make more room for the human story.
